If you like to use copywork to reinforce phonics and handwriting you want to be sure to take a look at Perfect Reading, Beautiful Handwriting ebook from Everyday Education, LLC. This digital handwriting book is so easy to use and beautifully laid out for parents and students. It works if you have older students who want to improve their handwriting skills or younger students who are just learning penmanship.
I loved how this book guides the teacher through the art and skill of teaching reading and handwriting to children. The methods are based on modeling for the child. The best way to teach children to read and write is for them to both hear and see. While our family did not go through the entire book, here are some areas of our focus.
Foundational Alphabet Skills
The first part of the ebook focuses on the letters of the alphabet, the sounds they make and correct formation. I did not spend much time on the section since my 6th grader is quite skilled in this area. I try a couple of lessons with my preschooler. He was not ready for tracing but he recognized some letters. He did well finger tracing in salt and rice.
The book goes through all the letters of the alphabet and then moves into stages of phonetic learning. If you want a solid phonetic foundation for your child, you could start implementing the methods in this book when you believe they are ready. As I mentioned before, I didn’t feel like my preschooler was ready for focused phonetic lessons. If you have a child at this stage, you can work slowly through the methods as we are doing.
Copywork and Dictation Options
Most of the book allows for plenty of copywork and dictation practice. When you’re crafting penmanship skills, it helps to have something interesting to copy. I love how this ebook includes famous quotes from people such as Daniel Webster, Goethe, Augustine, and others.
It also teaches you how to join letters together for cursive writing practice.
