3 Easy Tips To Organize Your Home

I don’t know about you, but I ALWAYS have “a million” things to do inside, outside, and around the house. Sometimes the amount of things I have to do seems horribly overwhelming. On a few occasions, it’s so overwhelming that I often avoid doing anything at all (major confession here). Maybe you’ve had a few “shut down” moments of your own. You know you need to organize your home but you don’t know where to begin. Here are 3 helpful tips that I use.

1. Make A Plan (And Stick To It)

Now, I know there are some people who don’t really plan. Instead, they just dive right in and get it done. That’s fantastic!! But, that is not me and it might not be you either. However, there are some occasions when I feel a burst of energy to dive in and get things done (usually after 3 cups of coffee…or 4). If you’re not that way, that’s okay. That’s where planning comes in. 

The best tip I can give you is to make a plan – one that you’ll actually stick to. Making a plan is futile if you never follow it (yes, I’ve been there too). Find some sort of planning technique that you’ll love and that you can make work for you. I use the Organized Life Planner and it’s made a huge difference in my organizational skills.

Learning to plan is like forming a habit. Over time, you’ll grow accustomed to it and learn how to make it work for you.

2. Work In Short Amounts

Once you make your plan, set short amounts of “work” time so you don’t get overwhelmed. For example, some people are really good at the “time blocking” method.  This is where you create tiny blocks of time in your schedule to get things done. This can be 10 minutes, 30 minutes, or really whatever you want. This method works great if you’re tackling a huge project or if you have trouble staying on task.

Set aside time in the morning or the evening to help yourself create good organizational habits. NO! It’s all about forming little habits over time.

3. Give Yourself Grace

This is one of the most important things I have learned as a mom, teacher, wife, and homemaker. I come from a long line of SERIOUS housekeepers. We’re talking top-notch cleaning. I tried to live my life that way for a long time and I just couldn’t keep up that level of work without being overwhelmed. When I give myself more grace, I find that:

  • my home and children are calmer
  • I am long-suffering
  • more things get done around the house
  • I am more attentive to my husband and children
  • There’s more time for the Word of God

I adjusted my priorities and realized that it’s okay if certain things don’t get done every day! Each morning, I look at my planner and write 3 priorities for the day. If I get more done, awesome!! If I don’t, that’s okay. I’m learning to give myself grace.
