*31 Prayers for Renewing Motherhood :Day 1*
What Every Mother Needs
Every mom has a superpower. Yes, indeed they do. Every mother has this incredible ability to determine what her children need and then they need it. The diaper change, the ratty, old puppy blanket, the shoved goldfish from the sofa cushion, the rice separate from the chicken. You know, the life versus death needs of children. This mysterious and unique gift can mark the difference between instant gratification or a five-hour melt- down in the grocery store. Mothers know their children’s needs because they know their children.
But what about a mother’s needs?
I’m the first one to admit I often forget my own needs until I’m hiding in the pantry ravenously searching for the remaining piece of dark chocolate, or stifling uncontrollable sobs because I haven’t slept in three days. Neglecting our needs as mothers is as natural as our meeting our children’s needs.
God Knows Our Needs
Sometimes, we don’t even know what we need at all. But God does. He knows our needs before we even ask him.
In Matthew chapter 6, Jesus instructs his disciples on taking care of the poor and needy. He then addresses them on how to pray. During this time, they were surrounded by self-righteous and vain people and leaders of the day who were more concerned with outward appearances than virtue formation. So, Jesus, the Master Teacher models it for them. But, right before He models this beautiful prayer beginning in verse 9, He tells them in verse 8, “Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.”
“Your Father knows what you need before you ask him.” Those words! Did you know that God already knows what you need before you ask? I did, but I confess that I often forget. Too often I allow overwhelm and chaos into my soul and become consumed with possible outcomes that may never come to pass. What do I need? I need to pause. To pray. To trust.
Yes, as mothers we know many needs around us, and we also have a fair bit of our own. But, the meeting of our needs is in hands much mightier than our own.
Our Need for Prayer
The best prayer we could pray when we don’t know what or how to pray is the model that our Lord taught us:
Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name.
Your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For Yours is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever,
